I learned to sculpt alongside my mother, Helen Collis, a figurative sculptor who was a founding member of the 5-ways studio in Brighton and a member of the Chelsea Arts Club. After studying languages at Manchester College of Higher Education, I embarked upon an international "adventure" living in France, Caribbean and Italy, working for Corporations and NGOs, ship chandlers and even running my own restaurant in Martinique... I came "home" to the UK and sculpture a few years back with my Italian husband and now devote my time to sculpting out of my home studio in Woking in Surrey.
Claire Nelson is best known for her striking sculptures of human figures and wood casts in metal resin.
Mostly modelling in wax and clay, she then makes a mould in silicone rubber of the piece. All casting and patination is carried out in-house.
The rawness in her work creates a striking, bold and expressive style. Whilst representational, her work is driven by feelings and sensations, often resulting in highly evocative, emotional pieces. Always inspired by nature, a key theme is change; the quintessence of life. The power, beauty and delicate balance of man’s inextricable bond with nature is another important thread running through her work.
The artist’s work is in private collections in UK, Italy, France, Australia, USA and China.
