Michael studied sculpture at Loughborough University before going on and training as a stonemason in York. Following this he gained a job at Lincoln Cathedral where he worked for almost fifteen years as a stone mason and carver as part of the ongoing restoration of the building.
While working at the cathedral Michael continued to sculpt and exhibit his work and since 2015 has worked full time in his own studio carving stone.
Michael’s work is mainly carved in marble and limestone. It deals with contrasts of texture and light, areas of the piece being gilded to accentuate the light passing through pierced areas which would normally be in shadow. The overall sculptures are a combination of geometric forms derived from architectural elements combined with more organic forms found in nature.
